Carson Valley Arts Council

The mission of the Carson Valley Arts Council is to create a climate for the arts through the presentation and promotion of cultural and educational events for the Carson Valley youth and community and the greater Western Nevada/Lake Tahoe Region.

The CVAC is a group of volunteers who got together to address a specific need in our community (Carson Valley, Nevada) – a suitable venue for performing and visual arts.

After an exhaustive search, the CVAC identified the old Copeland Lumber Building and recognized its potential to fulfill the need in the community for a mid-sized theater venue. The building’s location as the “gateway to historic downtown Minden” identified it as a viable candidate for transformation into a multi-functional cultural arts center.

In December 2006, CVAC organized the first concert series for public awareness of the pending venue project.

CVAC has been providing a quality concert series for the past 10 years. All concert series are supported by donations from local businesses and patrons of the concerts and through ticket sales.

Nevada Talking Book Services

We loan books and magazines in audio format and specialized playback equipment postage free. They provide this service to Nevada residents who cannot read or hold standard printed material because of a visual or physical limitation.

Recording volunteers assist the Recording Program produce books and magazines about Nevada and by Nevada authors. They produce recordings in two soundproof recording booths within the library. The Recording Program Coordinator will schedule an applicant for an interview and booth time. The two volunteer positions available are for narrator and reviewer.

1) Narrators should have the ability to read with a clear voice, to sustain a consistent level of verbal energy over a long period of time, and to read conversationally. A commitment to complete a book is extremely important; this includes time for narration and corrections. A time commitment of two hours per week is desired and speeds the production process along. In addition to a brief interview, narrators will be asked to read a one-page story.

2) Reviewers listen to a narrator’s recording, noting when and where errors, mispronunciations and extraneous sounds are made. Good hearing, attention to detail, concentration skills and basic computer skills are necessary.

Carson High Safe Grad Booster

Safe Grad has been a tradition for Carson High since 1988, started by community volunteers, after a series of graduation incidents and deaths related to alcohol. The primary goal is to prevent the use of alcohol and drugs and the consequences, including driving drunk, for graduates or others who might be hurt. The recent graduate can also see how much fun they can have when they take responsibility and celebrate without alcohol and drugs.

This event is a congratulation for the graduates and a showing of how much the community cares about them completing their education. This, in most cases, is the last chance for some graduates to get together and celebrate their accomplishment. Safe Grad is a parent and community sponsored all-night party that begins the evening after graduation at the Carson City Community Center. Once inside the Community Center, graduates will experience a variety of fun and safe activities, including food, music, entertainment, games and other activities during the all-night party. After breakfast, graduates who have paid the trip fee will load onto buses and head to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo for an exciting day at the park.

A lower level remodel occurred in 2000 which added kitchen space, class and meeting rooms, a workshop and storage areas. In 2010, another remodel updated the lobby to include Nevada State history exhibits and opened the stage area to include problem solving activities. In 2013, the STEM room became operational with exhibits for children 2-8 featuring an aquarium, greenhouse, models of the human body and a virtual computer generated animal dissection station.

Sustainable Tahoe

In a nutshell our goal is very simple. We’re hoping to help people change the way they think by changing the way they play! We want people having fun in nature – improving their health, feeling more connected to nature, and having time to create experiences that enrich their lives. We want people involved in the “experience” economy, so that they can feel happier, healthier, and more connected.

We feel that geo tourism is the future of Tahoe – it’s the future of travel.

Sustainable Tahoe showcases the cool adventures one can have in Tahoe – adventures that many people are unaware exist. The principal goal of the organization is building awareness and building community – we want people to get a taste of the fun and novel things that are available around this beautiful lake.

What sparked the formation of Sustainable Tahoe?

Sustainable Tahoe formed to address 3 key challenges that threaten the water clarity of Lake Tahoe:

Economy – Outdated tourism model which limits visitors’ connection to the place while putting water clarity at risk. (like being car-dependent vs. having interlinked water to land transit system)

Environment – Massive restoration investment that lacks adequate education, awareness and action to be effective, successful, and sustainable.

Community – competition within the region, rather than competing as one unified region. This confuses visitors and compromises environmental goals.

Tahoe can do better!

Sustainable Tahoe, a 501c3, is demonstrating how preservation is profitable.

Our passionate group of volunteers facilitate the adoption of stewardship and sustainability by showcasing, cultivating, and connecting models of success. Working with private, public and social sectors, we seek environmentally responsible behavior and spotlight best practices to inspire others.

Once a year, we host the “Tahoe Expo” – a geo tourism showcase of sustainable and seldom-seen adventures and explorations of the 8 Worlds of Lake Tahoe:

http://www.facebook.com/TahoeExpo

http://www.tahoeexpo.com/

This event usually takes place in September – if you’re interested in learning more about next year’s event then “like” our page or message us for more info.

In addition, we pay for training, special diets, treats and canned pet foods, and microchip the shelter dogs and cats. We also use funds to improve the shelter’s kennels, bedding, exercise areas, and have provided separate housing for cats and kittens.

DAWG Active Volunteers visit the dogs and cats at the shelter 365 days a year, including holidays when the shelter is closed to the public. We exercise and walk them, give affection, grooming, training, and praise. The time we spend with them gives us information about their behavior, which we share with potential adopters.

DAWG facilitates the adoption of the dogs and cats through special adoption events, our website, Facebook, and through newspaper advertising.

DAWG also educates the community about responsible pet ownership. We provide speakers to community groups and events, as well as printed educational materials.
