What is Lymphatic Drainage Massage?

lymphatic drainage massage after plastic surgery

Lymphatic Drainage Massage is a specialized massage technique that assists lymph flow which helps your body replenish itself with clean, healthy lymph fluid.

After plastic surgery, excessive fluid and toxins can build up in your lymphatic system. This can lead to uneven healing, longer recovery times, fibrosis, infection, and greater pain. Uncontrolled swelling could potentially create other complications such as pockets of fluid becoming trapped (seroma) resulting in infection. Lymphatic drainage massage is a highly recommended therapy after plastic surgery and our clinicians at Battle Born Home Health are certified in this procedure.

Bruising after Plastic Surgery

Bruising will likely occur and will be especially noticeable for the first few days following plastic surgery. Bruises are broken down cellular tissue and old red blood cells that are stuck in the tissues after surgery.  Lymphatic massage moves these waste products out of the areas where they are trapped. This allows you to look better, feel better and regain function more quickly.

Fibrosis and Scarring

After your surgery, specialized cells (collagen) move into the area of your procedure to help stabilize the tissue. If your lymph flow is compromised post-surgery due to swelling, and excess fluid, these stabilizing proteins can form into lumps, known as fibrosis, which ultimately is what creates scarring. In addition to an undesirable appearance, fibrosis can restrict motion and produce an overall sense of tightness. Lymphatic drainage massage can prevent, or reduce fibrosis because it removes fluid buildup, helps break down the accumulation of large protein structures, and enhances proper lymphatic drainage.

How soon after surgery should I start my Lymphatic Drainage sessions?

Most surgeons recommend lymphatic drainage as early as possible, ideally within the first few days after surgery. Like most health-related services, lymphatic massage requires a doctor’s order (prescription) and we will work closely with your physician to offer you the best care.
