What you need to know:
The Medicare program, as well as many other policies and laws guarantees that you have a right to a choice of home health agencies. The Medicare statute specifically states that any individual who is entitled to benefits under Part A or Part B may obtain health services from any institution, agency, or person that is qualified to participate as a provider of services in Medicare Part A or Part B (See 42 U.S.C. § 1395a(a)). A beneficiary’s choices may be limited under Part C, but this is because when a beneficiary chooses to enroll in the managed care benefit, the beneficiary voluntarily relinquishes his or her right to choose a provider.

Ask why?
Find out why the physician or staff recommended the agency. What are their specific experiences working with the home health agency?
Ask for a list of agencies
Hospitals have policies to comply with state laws to ensure they provide you with all options, not just one.
Make some calls. It’s worth the time!
Call the home health agencies, or have a trusted friend or family member call them for you. Is the home health agency knowledgeable and welcoming?
Ask for a visit!
In many cases, a representative will come to you to speak about the agency. This is a great opportunity to have questions answered, get an impression of the company, and determine if they are the right fit for you!
